Whoa.an asymmetrical dress with slouchy boots and a leather jacket -- perfection.Chloe SunglassesLet me start by saying that if I could only wear one outfit for the rest of my life, I’m 99.9% certain that this would be IT. I like the way it makes me feel — and that seems to be super important for me lately. Also, there’s something really sassy about a skirt with boots.

Relatedly, I recently read French Woman Don’t Sleep Alone. A lot of it is BS and I find the author/narrator grating at times, so this is by no means an endorsement. That said, there are some great takeaways, including this one: wear something that makes you feel seductive, powerful, feminine, confident — no yoga pants at the grocery store.

Now, I’ve always been a firm believer in putting your best foot forward, but I’ve never looked at it through this exact lens. In fact, I’ve downplayed girliness for years out of fear of looking juvenile. With this outfit, I’m reminded of the lesson above, and I think I’ve finally got it right.

9 additional gems from French Women Don’t Sleep Alone:

  1. Lead an interesting life — surround yourself with current events, art, books etc.
  2. Buy and use perfumes, creams, lotions and fragrant soaps & candles — aka spend time on yourself.
  3. Develop a true sense of personal style — a skirt with boots is always a YES.
  4. Buy and wear matching lingerie, everyday.
  5. Have an interesting group of friends with whom you socialize regularly — mixed groups {men & women} are best.
  6. Master the art of entertaining & cook well.
  7. Seduce everyone, all the time.
  8. Don’t be such an open book — a little mystery is a good thing.
  9. Adopt fitness as a lifestyle — you’ll stop seeing it as one more thing on your to-do list.

PS: Outfit 100% Poshmark!

Head to Toe: Chloe sunglasses, Topshop leather moto jacket, Helmut Lang asymmetrical dress, Isabel Marant boots, Vintage Lois Vuitton bag, Too many rings to name — though the green one is via Rocksbox and the negative chevron ring is from TomTom Jewelry.

With all the monochrome/solids I’ve been rocking lately, it seems like these shoes just GO WITH EVERYTHING. And they’re perfect for hoofing it around the city while still looking stylish. Important.

Tip:

If you’re feeling a little shy about animal prints, starting with an accessory or a small element, like a shoe, is a great way to get your toes wet {figuratively speaking, of course}.

Here’s something totally random and off topic for you: I’ve been sad about how the personal stories and anecdotes I used to share here have been phased out over time, replaced by lots and lots of #OOTDs. Have you been missing them too? Did you read my blog way back when?

Little Lessons was a series I wrote for years, and it got phased out because I got burnt out. Little Lessons started to feel hard, mundane and repetitive; I wasn’t excited to write it. And more than any other type of post I’ve done, it ended up feeling like a chore. With perspective, I think the reality is that anything you do for that period of time might start to feel that way. Maybe I’ve OD’d on outfit posts for the exact same reason.

The point is, loves, that the very thing I loathed, I now long for. So, I’m not sure in what incarnation, but I’ll be bringing some more personal touches to this neck of the woods. And of course, you can always follow along via twitter and instagram for real-time thoughts and experiences. xox.

Head to toe: Chloe sunglasses via Poshmark, Muubaa oxblood leather jacket, J. Crew tippi sweater, H&M chambray shirt, J Brand 811 skinnies via Poshmark, SCHUTZ leopard sneakers via Poshmark, TOMTOM chevron ring, Alexander Wang Rocco bag

Overpacked

17 December 2013

Oh, snap. I’m in love and yes. It is enormous. I swear the 3.1 Phillip Lim 31 hour bag wasn’t this big when I looked at it in the store. But I guess it must have been. Major pros: You can fit your whole life in here. Major cons: You look like you’re perpetually ready […]

Casual Conversation

9 December 2013

There were two very important things happening the day I wore this outfit. 1. I was meeting Drybar founder Alli Webb and 2. I had a date. Obviously, I needed to feel both awesome and comfy all day. And, I have to admit that I’m a little weird about being super fashion girl on a […]
