How-To: The Maxi

by Kate Franco on January 7, 2011 · 2 comments

I’ve been thinking about maxis for a good solid month now, and realized it was probably time to talk about it! I’ve been totally unsure if I can pull this look off in a casual setting. Being pretty petite {5’3″}, I am wary of anything that will be totally overwhelming. I do have a maxi dress that I love, but I’m pretty sure that it makes me look kind of like a tent. This is probably a look that is going to take some tailoring for me, but I think I want to try it out! Especially after seeing these gorgeous photos {you can click to enlarge!}:

Tips for petite ladies:

  • Monochromatic = best. Stay away from large scale prints or belts that will break up the lines of your body.
  • Pick slim shapes. Lots of billowy fabric will not work if you’re petite.
  • Wear a heeled shoe…if you’re petite you’re going to need all of the height you can get!
  • Always pick floor length over ankle length. Trust me!

Some of my top picks below. I have to say that it’s way more black than I usually wear…but hey, black is slimming, right? Plus, I could totally winterize any of these looks with some faux fur or chunky knit goodness.
