Dream Home: Living Room List

For a long time {maybe even a decade}, I’ve said that my “A” “Number One” goal in life is to own a home. Like owning a home was when I’d feel settled, or mark the culmination of some series of events that meant I’d grown up and made something of myself. Something that would say, “HEY, I’m fabulous! This is how it’s done.” Well, then one day kind of recently, I woke up and realized that I’m tired of waiting for the perfect storm. If I’m not going to own a home {WHO CAN AFFORD THAT IN SF? Is it even fiscally responsible?}, I’m going to optimize my current situation. Everything is what you make of it. And I’m finally in a living situation that feels pretty permanent.

Now I’m learning about myself one room at a time — and I thought it would be fun to share.

I have a Pinterest board called Sweet Spaces, and for years pretty images have been accumulating there. While I have my personal style down to a science, my interiors aesthetic definitely needs some definition. Last week after a recommendation from a friend, I started parsing out this Pinterest board to other smaller boards that are labeled by room. I started with the Living Room. Then, I looked at all the living rooms to figure out what they had in common. It was a fun little puzzle and the resulting summary is really satisfying! Of course, you know how much I love making lists, so I guess that makes sense.

Living Room Summary:

  1. Large scale art + gallery walls are a must.
  2. Lots and lots of books. On tables, holding up tables, stacked super high, on makeshift shelves and piled into bookcases. Everywhere.
  3. Black and white striped rugs OR anything that feels remotely kilim-esque or aztec/southwestern.
  4. Big Plants in baskets or pots to make pretty vignettes.
  5. There are pretty much 3 sofa options in my dream home: either a chesterfield, blue velvet loveliness, or something with clean straight lines in a color or pattern that packs a punch.
  6. Same for coffee tables, 3 options: round, glass and minimalist, or reclaimed wood with industrial accents
  7. Metallic accent tables, yes please.
  8. Industrial floor lamps to toughen it up.
  9. White walls that feel clean and fresh and allow the furniture to speak for itself.
  10. Pops of color are paramount.

Bohemian, eclectic, happy? How would you describe it?
